Mary Always
2022
This was a project created during my senior year of undergrad. Initially, it focused on placing marginalized people in spaces they weren't allowed or represented, but it grew to be so much more. My culture, the lack of representation of Native artists and work, and my love of photography and alternative processes heavily influenced me. As well as my need to connect to others like myself, I went to several powwows around Denver, taking photos of dancers and their regalia.
I began making my first patchwork skirt, something my tribe is known for. I placed my images within emulated designs producing them as cyanotypes that were then bleached and toned. This allowed me the flexibility to print them on fabric and manipulate them in any way I needed.
The clothing that my tribe creates are works of art. This project allowed me to do that in a completely new form while also paying homage to my elders by naming it after my grandmother.
